  Angelo Volandes MD, MPH

  Dr. Angelo Volandes serves as the contact Principal Investigator and co-Director of Dartmouth SYNERGY, the Dartmouth Clinical and Translational Science Institute, along with Drs. Anna Tosteson and Keith Paulsen. He also serves as Interim Chief Research Officer at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine, and the Anna Gundlach Huber Professor in Medicine. He is also the contact Principal Investigator and co-Director of CASI, the Center for Aging and Serious Illness, Dartmouth Health’s Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE). He also holds appointments in the Dartmouth Cancer Center and The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice.

  His work centers on late-stage (T3) translational and delivery science, serious-illness communication, shared decision-making, embedded pragmatic clinical trials, rural healthcare delivery, and narrative medicine through the use of film. He is a member of the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory and has led pragmatic and cluster-randomized trials.

  Rural healthcare delivery has been a sustained focus of his research portfolio. For more than a decade he led a statewide serious-illness program in Hawaii, coordinated across the state's hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and hospices. At Dartmouth Health, his work adapts decision support to the realities of rural care through home-based and telehealth models co-created with the communities they serve. 

  His research has been supported by the National Institute on Aging, National Cancer Institute, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institute of Nursing Research, National Institute of General Medical Sciences, NIH Common Fund, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, among others.

  He received his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Harvard University, earned his medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine, and completed an MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health. He trained in residencies (internal medicine) and fellowships (clinical effectiveness, bioethics) at the University of Pennsylvania, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. He was a faculty fellow in Ethics at the Harvard Center for Ethics. Prior to joining Dartmouth in 2024, he spent two decades on faculty at Harvard and the Massachusetts General Hospital.

  Anna N. A. Tosteson ScD

  Anna Tosteson is the James J. Carroll Professor of Oncology and the Associate Director for Population Sciences at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center. She serves as an Associate Director for SYNERGY, Dartmouth’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute. She previously served as the Interim Director of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice.

  Tosteson is a decision scientist and health services researcher who studies how the diffusion of innovations in health care are changing health, costs and quality of care. Through the use of multiple data sources including registries, clinical and epidemiological studies, and administrative claims data, she seeks insights into the long-term clinical and economic effects of alternative approaches to health care delivery with a focus on cancer screening and overall health.

  Tosteson is internationally recognized for demonstrating osteoporosis’s direct and indirect economic and societal costs on the health care system, workforce productivity, and quality of life. Her work on the surgeon general’s report, Bone Health and Osteoporosis, contributed to the adoption of prevention, screening, and treatment for that disease.

  Tosteson earned an ScD in biostatistics (health decision science), an MS in biostatistics from Harvard University, and a BS in statistics and biometry from Cornell University.

  Keith D. Paulsen PhD

  Dr. Keith Paulsen, Ph.D., is the Robert A. Pritzker Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering, and Professor of Radiology and Surgery at its Geisel School of Medicine; Director of the Advanced Imaging Center and Scientific Director of the Center for Surgical Innovation at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center; Co-Director of Translational Engineering in Cancer at the Dartmouth Cancer Center.

  Paulsen’s research interests are currently centered on imaging and image-guidance for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, especially cancers, in the brain, spine and breast. His research program continues to be highly translational in terms of moving innovative technologies, many of which are developed in house, into early stage clinical feasibility studies.

  Paulsen is a Fellow of SPIE, AIMBE, IEEE, Optica, NAI, and Co-founder of start-ups Cairn Surgical and InSight Surgical Technologies. He has authored 500+ archival publications cited more than 38,000 times (h-index of 107), and is an inventor on 40+ issued/pending patents over the past 30 years. He earned his BS in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, and his MS and PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Dartmouth College.

  Jon D. Lurie MD, MS

  Dr. Lurie is a Professor of Medicine, Orthopaedics, and of Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI) at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He received his BSE in Geological Engineering from Princeton, an MD from Stanford University, and a Master's Degree in Evaluative Clinical Sciences from Dartmouth. He is a practicing general internist in the Section of Hospital Medicine, with extensive experience in health services and comparative effectiveness research, focusing primarily on low back pain and rehabilitation. He also serves as a chair for both the Dartmouth Health and Dartmouth College IRBs. His overarching research interests are in evidence-based decision-making and decision-based evidence-making.

  Deborah A. Hogan PhD

  Dr. Hogan is the Thomas S. Kosasa Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. Her lab focuses on the synergistic relationships between organisms in human microflora and the molecular basis for such interactions, especially between the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the dimorphic fungus Candida albicans. She leads the Clinical and Translational Research Core of the Dartmouth COBRE, focusing on cystic fibrosis, and also directs a T32 in host-microbe interactions.
