DH TriNetX accounts are available to current Dartmouth Health or Dartmouth College employees.
TriNetX is a web-based platform for exploring data shared by dozens of organizations. It can be used for sample size estimates (e.g. “how many patients at Dartmouth Health with X disease who are on Y medication”) or to answer epidemiologic questions (eg “Of 130 million patients, how many have X disease, and what % are in different age and gender brackets?)'. With practice, you can build quite complex, Boolean queries (and/or/not). You can limit the search to just DH patients or explore across 130 million patients at 70+ healthcare organizations in 30 States.
FAQs
No, at this time the Dartmouth use of TriNetX is only for de-identified, aggregate counts. SYNERGY Research Informatics currently does not have staff to provide researchers with patient level data sets from TriNetX. Researchers can request data about DH patients through the usual process with help from the DH Analytics Institute.
No, the use of TriNetX is considered not human subjects research and/or is preparatory to research. Therefore, you are not required to submit a protocol to IRB if you are only using TriNetX. However, if your research protocol also involves other activities that do require IRB review, then you should obtain review first. If you plan to publish based on TriNetX activity, please enter the project into eIRB so that we can track the scholarly activity. It is important for SYNERGY Informatics to report on the academic output resulting from platforms such as TriNetX.
You are not required to do any training before using TriNetX. TriNetX does provide free, online training materials. When you log-in, look for the ? icon in the upper, right corner. That takes you to the TriNetX training materials. We recommend that users complete the 3 CITI research training courses prior to using TriNetX in order to understand data protection in general. Currently, SYNERGY Informatics does not offer any training or assistance, but we hope to do so in the future. Feel free to explore, but you are on your own. Be aware that building a query incorrectly may lead to misleading results. If you can, verify the general validity of your results with other sources.
Access is available to anybody with a hitchcock.org or dartmouth.edu email. To request access, please fill out an SYNERGY Informatics Services Request Form. We may freeze accounts that are not used for more than 1 year. Researchers can email for access to be restored, and prior work will be saved. After leaving employment at DH or College, accounts will be terminated, and work may be permanently deleted unless arrangements are made in advance.
