Completing the necessary training and preparation will facilitate your research and avoid design errors or accidental loss of data once the project is collecting data. Training will become mandatory in 2026 for REDCap users. If you wish to attend office hours, you will need to complete training and come in with questions after you’ve begun design.
There are two training tracks we recommend and are piloting as described below. (You can choose either, but please complete one or the other.)
REDCap Training Videos
- Log into REDCap here (redcap.hitchcock.org) and you will see REDCap Training Videos on the top right of your home page. We strongly recommend that you watch these videos.
- Strongly recommended for anyone designing a full project in REDCap: Full Project Build (75 minutes) – this video explains step-by-step how to create a database, providing examples of how to add different types of data fields, to begin work with surveys, and to export data.
- Recommended for REDCap data entry personnel: Brief Overview (4 minutes); Detailed Overview (14 minutes; Types of Projects (3 minutes); Single Survey Project (5 minutes) – at least these videos and any more that relate to your project -the full list is at the link above.
- Recommended for anyone planning a longitudinal project, or using randomization: Watch the videos above plus related videos on longitudinal design and randomization.
REDCap Instructional Lessons: Wake Forest Training Modules
The REDCap international consortium, led by Vanderbilt University, has over 8000 institutions, and Wake Forest University’s REDCap team offers an excellent (free) series of short training courses organized in five pathways: read more on Wake Forest’s website here. These modules offer many helpful screen shots to walk you through the learning at your own pace.
The recommended pathway for many DH users is the Project Builder and Management track, aimed at users who will set up and/or manage a REDCap project (including Clinical Research Coordinators and others).
